ABOUT THE PARISH

The Parish of Great Totham includes the highest point in the Maldon District, Beacon Hill, which is 83 metres at its highest point. It provides extensive views across farmland towards the Blackwater Estuary and the Dengie Peninsular.

The Civil Parish (The Ecclesiastical Parish boundary differs and is shown in the St Peter’s Church parish magazine) covers an area of 3038 hectares of which about 100 hectares is occupied by mainly domestic dwellings, whilst the majority is used for woodland, farmland and meadows presenting a pleasing landscape.

There are two main settlements. The largest is centred around the Post Office and Bull Green and houses the majority of the population. It includes a school and two public houses, with a smaller but significant number of households at Totham Hill. These settlements are also known at Totham South and Totham North. Smaller settlements are at Broad Street Green, Beacon Hill and Scraley Road. The population of the whole Parish in 2021 was 3,055.
